National Fragrance Day | Setting The Mood With Scent

Scents have the power to trigger memories, set the mood, and create lasting impressions. Choosing a home fragrance can be just as imperative as selecting a paint color or the interior decor for a room. On National Fragrance Day, we are reminded of the power and associations of scent. Read on for our tips on cultivating the perfect fragrance to freshen up your space.

Selecting the right scent for your home is just like picking the right perfume for your body. Consider how you want to feel in a particular space and how you might be able to set the mood.

For example, your bedroom should make you feel cozy and relaxed. A calming scent is a natural choice for the bedroom-think vanilla or vetiver, as the are distinctive yet subtle.

Left: diptyques’s Ambre - a delicate blend of woody vetiver and patchouli, enhanced with radiant aniseed, insolent spices, and Tonka bean.

Your bathroom should make you feel refreshed. We like to opt for citrusy scents with fresh, clean notes.

For the kitchen, go for something light that won’t overpower the aromas of food, but neutralize them with a subtle aquatic or spicy fragrance.

Earthy, wooden scents are best suited for living areas where you spend your time winding down.

Right: Nest’s Wild Mint & Eucalyptus Reed Diffuser - wild mint and eucalyptus blended with fresh, awakening basil and ginger.

Once you’ve selected a scent - it’s time to figure out the format.

Candles can further help set the mood, creating an ambient light that adds to the overall decor of your space.

Diffusers are great if you want to set it and forget it, plus you’ll have a balanced set filling up the room throughout the day.

Consider using a linen spray on your pillows or duvet, or for a freshened aroma in your living room by misting soft surfaces throughout your home, like your living room sofa, decorative pillows and area rugs.

Left: Byredo’s Cotton Poplin room spray offers delicate notes of blue chamomile, linen, white cedarwood and sweet musk.
